We're interested in buying a miniature mule yearling for a 4-H project. The red marks on all four hoof walls, as shown in the attached photo, make me wonder at their condition. What questions should I ask the owner before we commit to a long drive to see her?

Thanks,

Heidi

Heidi I don't think it is unusual to see some red discoloration on the outside hoof wall of white hooves. That said the rear hooves look really long.

It is hard to tell from your pics, but it looks like there is a deep red line at about the same place on each hoof. It would be unusual for a yearling to have foundered.

I would ask her if he had ever foundered and for good pics of the hooves with a sole view.

Just wanted to let you know the mule was sold to someone else. Feel free to comment on the thread if you want for interest's sake. Thanks.

Hello Heidi,
Visible bruising in white hoof walls and soles is common in horses with no history or current symptoms of problems.
