Dr O Demetrius (who is coming 12) had his HMO exam yesterday and all physical exams findings were normal, to include Flexor Tendons, suspensory Ligaments and Joint ROM. It was noted however he had mild effusion on the R hock but was put on the lunge and was 100% sound at all gates. There is no evidence of pain. Our vet said that no intervention was required such as IA NSAIDS or IM NSAIDs such as Adequan and just to watch for signs of lameness. Since he is showing no signs of it being anything other than a cosmetic issue at this point I am not sure how best to proceed. I would rather take a conservative approach however I don't want that to lead to a chronic condition. I should note he only lies on that side in his stall so he could have knocked his hock and he does have limited turnout. Could that potentially cause a worsening of the swelling? Any guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Corinne

PS. There is no heat or external trauma. I palpated it last night and I could not really feel much so it must be that mild.

With the notion that a conservative approach is wanted and that such effusions with no history of lameness are often not associated with degenerative processes I agree with your veterinarian that a wait and watch position is very reasonable. DrO
