Hi Dr. O, I turned one of my bred mares out into a pasture containing fescue several times over the past month. I did not realize the tall grass in the back of the pasture was fescue, otherwise would not have put her out there, but after examining it today I am certain it is indeed tall fescue. The mare was out on the pasture for about 3 hrs each time, and I do know for certain that she consumed a good deal of the fescue as I saw her eating it. Unfortunately I do not know this mare's exact due date, as I just got her a few months ago and she was pasture bred. Best guess on a breeding date, based on the previous owner's vet's ultrasound is May 20, which would put her due end of this week/first part of next week. My concern is that she has been bagged up for about 6 weeks and I am almost certain her bag has decreased in size over the past couple weeks. Is it possible that she could have consumed enough fescue in that small amount of time to cause her any issues? Thanks! CC

Two grazings for 3 hours at a time over a month is unlikely to cause Fescue Toxicity. If you are concerned about the decreased lactation the first step is to have the mare examined and the uterus/fetus checked best using ultrasound. DrO
