My Tennessee Walker has stringhalt. It was much better last summer but is worse now. I read that increased exercise may be helpful. Do you think it is painful? My goal for him is a trail horse.

Hello kris, I have not seen a case of Stringhalt that is painful but not the same as saying your horse is not having pain. This would be a question for your veterinarian who can examine your horse. DrO

Thank you for your answer. If only the horse could talk. It seems like it would strain the other muscles from moving out of balance. I talked to my vet and he said that the surgery is cosmetic. I'm trying to decide if I should do it. When I ride him I hear lots of what's wrong with your poor horse. He's a great horse and I want what is best for him. Here is an unfair question to ask what would you do if he was your horse...anyone?

If he means surgery does not address the primary problem I agree with his assessment but if your horse is responsive to the surgery the horse will stop having symptoms of stringhalt. In these cases it is curative. However not all cases respond and their are other possibilities for treatment as outlined in the article. Which you choose will depend on the severity or your horses symptoms and your goals. DrO

I have decided to have the surgery. I'm going to try to get a video tonight so I can have before and after shots. Wish my boy good luck!

Thank you! The surgery is Friday morning. I'm sure my next round of questions will be about how to deal with stall rest. He had strangles last spring and was stuck in the stall, he felt so bad that he didn't mind. He is a rescue, he was so skinny when I got him. Who knows what would have happened to him with the stringhalt too. I was supposed to be down to 1 horse when he found me!

Hi Kris, Good luck with the surgery. I'm afraid I don't have any knowledge with respect to the varied degrees and causes of stringhalt but one of the girls at the barn I ride at has a horse with stringhalt that has been shown successfully in both the 3' hunters and 3.3' jumpers for at least 5 years. He is schooled over higher courses regularly. He shows no sign of pain and is a happy camper. The trick is not to do any walking in the hunter ring as that is the only gait his shows up in. It is extremely noticeable at the walk. Other horses often jump back when he lifts his bad leg at they appear to think a kick is coming their way. Lynn

Kris, wishing you the best of luck and a favorable outcome for the surgery tomorrow. If you haven't already, do a search on stall rest. Lots of posts and reco's to make it easier on you and your horse as many of us have had to go through it.

The surgery went well and he came home the same day. The stitches look great. The Dr. said it may take a few weeks or months to know if it worked. I get to start hand walking him today so I can't wait to see if it's better. He is awesome for his shots, and handling stall rest. The only time is gets upset is when we switch horses in and out. I have been keeping a horse in the barn with him so he has company. Thank you for your good luck wishes!!! Dr. O as always, thank you.
