I am fitting/showing for halter young 900lb QH yearling. He has never been "hungry" a day in his life, so food is never a big deal to him. However, over the last few weeks, I have noticed that he just really won't eat well. His hair coat is also a little rough. Our flies have bloomed like crazy, and it has gotten hot. He has no tolerance for ANYTHING on his skin; many halter horses are thin skinned. He stays under sheets to both protect his coat, and protect him from flies. Both breeder and trainer have suggested that I treat him for ulcers, that is more common than not for halter horses to have them. He is fed Ultium, Dac Oil, Dac Bloom, Dac Colt Grower, and alfalfa pellets twice a day. He has free access to flake alfalfa, as well. He is stalled under fans and misters from about 6 am til I get there after work. He is worked/sweated/groomed, etc. several days a week. Regardless of that schedule, he is out on 1 acre unfertilized grass all night. I am assuming I should treat him as prescribed for adult horse with Ulcerguard? I also have lixotinic to help with appetite, too. Will that interfere with Ulcerguard? Trainer also suggested weight appropriate dose of zantac (ramitidine??) with little alfalfa before each work-out. Any one have any better ideas?

After further reading - studies I came across used lecithin and not pectin. Does it matter which one? I can find products with one or the other, but not both. Thanks!

Michelle, if you believe ulcers are the problem you should use omeprazole in a preparation that has been shown effective in horses and use the weight appropriate dosage regardless of age. As to whether Lixtotinic might interfere, I am uncertain. If you use the omeprazole I see no need to use the ranitidine. DrO
