Discussion on 3 days old, wobbly in hind legs

Maximus was born this Wednesday (May 12) after a relatively difficult birth (poor presentation, but all worked out within 30 minutes or so). He is a very long legged colt. While in the stall, he seems to have full control of his legs. When I turned him and Mama out while cleaning their stall, I noticed him to be "wobbly" on the hind legs. It seems that the hocks will not stay in alignment with the rest of his hind end. I put them back in their stall after the stall was cleaned.

Question 1: Am I doing the right thing by limiting exercise?

Question 2: If limited exercise is needed, will a 20-30 minute jaunt once or twice a day hurt things?

Thanks for your help. It's Saturday, and I'd really rather not call my vet until he's back in the office unless I need to.

Hello Aleta,
It is within the range of normal for some amount of laxity to be present in a newborn and whether your foals has so much that full turn out is contraindicated is a judgement call that will require examining the foal. If you are uncertain whether the degree of laxity is normal or not you should continue to limit exercise to a stall or small paddock until the foal can be looked at and a judgement made.

Thanks. He's out in a small paddock now, and seems a little stronger. Will consult the vet tomorrow.

Improvement suggests you are doing the right thing.

I had a colt born May 8th that had a little laxity in his hocks like you described. It only lasted 2 or 3 days. I also named him Maximus.

What a coincidence. We named our Maximus such because he was so danged big. At least those hind legs seemed to go on forever while Mama was trying her best to deliver him.

I think that my Max's second name will be Baddas, as he's a feisty little unafraid colt that likes to run around and try to kick humans.

Best of luck to you and your Maximus.

Thanks, my Maximus won't be so large mom is only 14.3 and dad is 14.2, so I thought he needed a big name to make him feel like he's something. I just call him Max.
