My colt is scheduled to fly from NY to Denmark on wednesday, and the international shipper just told me that he just learned from the USDA that there is an outbreak of Vesicular stomatitis and now the colt needs to be tested for that, and presumably delayed.

I can't find anything on the USDA page about a current outbreak. Does anyone know anything about it? How long does it take to get testing results? What is this likely to mean for shipping?

I'm pulling my hair out over here in Denmark!!

The most recent case just reported was in Arizona.

It seems kind of extreme that they would quarantine a horse coming from New York or is your horse being shipped out of there after previously having resided elsewhere?

Canada selectively quarantines horses coming from just a few selected states.

The below links may help answer your other questions about testing, etc.

My equine veterinarian had a state veterinarian out on my farm a couple of years ago as this disease is legally "reportable" because it poses a huge risk to the cattle industry, and a horse of mine had quite a few symptoms but tested negative.

Perhaps you will need a negative Elisa test if an examination and perhaps 10 day quarantine is not acceptable.

Hello Lisa,
Unfortunately we do not have enough information to answer your questions but if this is the only reason for a hold up and your horse is not from the infected areas I see no reason for any further hold up once this is established. If they are going to insist on further diagnostics it should take less than 7 business days to straighten out your horse's VS status. Unfortunately these government services are often move slowly and/or not always rational in the decisions they make. Lastly they may be information I am not aware of.
