So, Dillon has decided that every time he is signed up for a conformation show, he has to get injured. Last Friday, he came in dragging his left hind. They found a ragged tear where I described in the title. So, they called the vet, who prescribed cold hosing twice a day, bute and antibiotics. He doesn't want to move, but he doesn't appear depressed, still trying to chew on anyone in the vacinity.
So, I went to see him yesterday, and his leg was HUGE!!! I would say about a 24 inches in diameter where the leg is attached to the abdomen. His sheath was also swollen.
So, apparently the vet thinks this is lymphangitis, and they are taking him to her place so he can get IV antibiotics. When the vet originally examined the wound, she felt a nerve bundle and a vein, neither of which had been injured, but they were both exposed.
Just wondering if anyone else has had somethign like this happen and what the outcome was.

Hello Alicia,
Wounds in this area are common but the extent of the wound varies greatly and will effect outcome. Exactly what tissues are torn? Is this an open wound as suggested in your post or is this a puncture wound that might have trouble draining?

Alicia,

That sounds like what happened to my gelding Cody a few years ago; I'll see if I can find the discussion so you can compare with what you have. Hmmm...the puncture was more in his inner thigh maybe. He got antibiotics also, and I would put the hose right in his wound and rinse it.

Alicia,

I don't know if this will be of any help but here's the link from Cody's wound, and there are pictures plus a reference to another members similar accident.

I hope he's o.k.

Well, it turned into oedematous myonecrosis, and he passed this morning. I have decided to stop my involvement in horses. Can you cancel my subscripion and refund me, Dr O? I appreciate all the help I have received from you and this list, but getting messages about horses just hurts too much and with all that has happened with me recently and my poor equines, I just can't continue.
Thank you,
Alicia

Alicia,

I know you are upset, but in the horse business we have a saying, once you get sh_t on your shoes you are in it for life. It may take a while for you to get over you loss, but some sweet horse is waiting for you when you decide its time.

I'll pass on this story with my condolences for your loss.

My mother-in-law loves animals and has had a cat or two or three in her life since I can remember. Recently, her last cat died at 19 years old and she said that was the last one because she was getting older and she did not want to have to worry that something would happen to the new cat if something happened to her.

Well, that lasted about three months(longer than I thought) one day she overheard her neighbor saying that unless she could find a home for her nieces cat they would have to take him to the shelter. My mother-in-law took the cat, she says the cat(Snowflake) and her were meant to be together and I assured her that if something happened to her, her cat would have a home with us.

You are not ready now, but hopefully you won't end your involvement with horses on such a sad note.

Take care

Alicia,

My condolences on your loss. What a very sad ending for your beautiful horse. You are in my thoughts, as I think of the beautiful horses we have lost. It is so very hard, especially when they are young.

Take care of yourself,

Thank you all who have shared and passed on your condolences. In regards to changing my mind, it won't happen. I have owned 7 horses in my 20 years of horse ownership. Of those, 3 have died. ALL THREE were horses I bred. First Guinness, then Lilly's baby with the dystocia, now Dillon. It is just not meant to be.
I have my dogs now, and they are not nearly so fragile.
I wish everyone well and better luck than I have had!
