Hello,
I own beautiful Sam.....he was diagnosed with high ringbone two years ago and the Vet said I might as well put him down. That was the last time I used that Vet. Sam is doing well as a trail horse and on his off days I let him rest. He is on Heiro, Shark Legs, and Devil's Claw Plus. He is a wonderful quarter horse, about 12 years old. I would like to know if there is something more I can do for him...........Thank you, Susan

Hello Susan,
Can you tell us how your horse has diagnosed and how he has done in the past few years: has the lameness worsened over time? How lame is he now?

He was diagnosed with ultra sound two years ago. I keep him on flat trail rides and out of deep footing. Sometimes he seems uncomfortable at the trot so we usually just walk. If he seems sore at all I give him time off. He sure likes to get out!

It is sad that at such a relatively young age he has been diagnosed with high ringbone.

There was a much older horse (23) who had been diagnosed with this and he had been given away as a free horse to a girl on my (past) riding team. Once his shoes were pulled and his horribly un-level feet under those shoes were put into balance he went just great.

Don't give up!

By ultrasound...do you still have the US findings that led to this diagnosis? Usually we diagnose high ringbone, osteoarthritis of the proximal pastern joint, by radiography.

To get back to your original question we have many recommendations in the article on ringbone including possible surgical cures. You can get to it by backing up one page (link) using the navigation bar at the top. Besides the specific recommendations in the article be sure to follow the link to the article on arthritis where we have more general recommendations for horses with arthritis of many types.
