My 3 year old gelding has had a bump under his skin that is about 1" by 1", the skin does move freely over the bump and it feels like the fluid/matter that is inside the bump is contained, like a cyst would be, the area will give when you press on it and than the bump returns to it's former size when you release. I can not find any irritated area like there would be with a bug bite although I did think that it was a bug bite when I first saw it. He has had this for about a month. Should the vet come out to take a look? He is not tender at all to having it pressed on and it is behind the girth area and not under the saddle area so is not interfering with training but I would prefer to be proactive with getting it looked at if it is something serious. Any thoughts?

Hello Susanne,
We don't know what the lump is but these type bumps are rarely emergencies and often can wait until the next regular visit. On the other hand if you need complete assurance you should at least call and talk with your veterinarian about it. One sign of needing to have the vet out more quickly is if it continues to grow.
