Hi, Back in April I had asked for suggestions about treating sweet itch. Since then, I think I have found some success as follows:

1) Large tub Diaper ointment with 40% zinc oxide (desitin or CVS has 40%), mix with tub of fly swat and 20 cc dexamethasone. This ointment has really helped. It stays on all night and usually for a good 36 hrs. My vet suggested the dexamethasone to add to it.
2) I ordered the belly dickie (Elite Horse Clothing). It's helped keep his midline and sheath area free from the breakout. This is not for every horse, but I have a very mellow quarter horse and he's a real trooper wearing this.
3) Recently I ordered a topical spray and supplement from Equine Medical & Surgical Assoc. (www.equinemedsurg.com). The fly spray is unbelievable! It really does repel the bugs. The supplement seems to be working also.

Anyway, after watching my poor horse suffer with this malady, it's such a relief to see him in some sort of comfortable position now. No more dragging his belly across the paddock to itch and less itching of his mane and tail. Once I started on the fly spray and supplement he really did quit itching his mane and tail.

Good luck to everyone else.
