My 4-year old quarter filly is fat and urinates a lot. I have been putting a grazing muzzle on her at night, which has helped her from getting bigger. She only gets about a cup and a half of Strategy and is on pasture. She stays fat all year long. Should I be concerned, as she seems perfectly healthy and her mother was fat too. I want to be careful, as I just lost my 12-year old mare to laminitus and I don't want to lose my 4-year old to anything.

Hello Paula, Yes you should be concerned as horses that are over conditioned are at greater risk of many ills including founder and surgical colic from strangulating pedunculated lipomas. For strategies for dealing with the obesity check out HorseAdvice.com » Horse Care » Equine Nutrition, Horse Feeds, Feeding » Fat or Obese Horse Nutrition. Concerning the frequent urination consider the possibilities and ways to diagnose them in the article associated with this area. DrO
