I have a four year old TB that was never raced and came to me with some type of stifle or "soft tissue" injury. The horse had been out to pasture for a year and was doing well, only showing intermittent variations in his gate. This horse has clean xrays on his hock and stifle. No ultrasound has been done as of yet. The stranger thing is he presents with several different gate variations in his right hind... Stall rest makes these symptoms worse and turnout seems to alleviate them. He walks with a hitch in his right hind and pulls his leg high around to the outside in an arcing motion. When he is really bad he will literally stand with his leg flexed high and out to the side for several moments as if its stuck. It isnt held under the belly and he doesnt slam his hoof down in the walk. He has never held it behind him at all for any period of time. When I had a lameness exam done recently the vet scraped her thumb down his spine and said he had a numbed reaction. She felt the patella and said it wasnt moving around. I guess an ultrasound is due but was hoping to have an idea before paying for one. I'm also concerned whether I should keep him in a stall or allow turnout. Like I said, keeping him confined seems to make him much worse. Bute does nothing. He runs around and trots but has trouble moving quickly to the right or left because of that leg. I would so appreciate any feedback to give me some idea of what this is. Doesn't present like string halt or UFP. THank you all so much!

Welcome Elizabeth, There are several conditions that might fit your horses description including an atypical stringhalt. We try to separate these out at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Stringhalt and then provide links to the specific articles on the different conditions.
