A client of mine bought a 17 year old pony mare in May. We noticed that the mare did not drink a lot of water during the day (she is stabled during the day and out with an automatic waterer at night) yet she urinated several times in her stall. The urine had a strong odor. She also rubbed her tail a lot. Most remarkable is that she would pin her ears and chase her rump around in a circle in her stall and bite her rump and act VERY agitated prior to urinating. We had the vet out and did a urine sample. The vet said her white blood cell count was indicative of a mild infection so we treated her with Naxcel for a week. She began to drink more water, urinate less often, and without the extreme agitation. Several weeks after finishing her antibiotics she is having all the same symptoms again. She is a typically happy, pleasant mare but she gets very, very irritated prior to urinating. She seems very uncomfortable. The vet is due to come again tomorrow. I am just wondering if anyone has had a horse with similar symptoms. I am thinking the vet will do bloodwork this time and palpate. I am assuming this is a urinary tract problem, but I guess it could be a reproductive system issue as well. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Brenda

Hi Brenda, To rule in or out problems with the urinary/reproductive system a good transrectal ultrasound would be invaluable. DrO
