Posted on Tuesday, Aug 10, 2010 - 7:10 am: Story of Nightwind, 31 year old gelding at out barn...March 2010 - sheath swollen and very itchy. Vet came and said to wash with dial soap every 3 days. Swelling would go down for a few days after washing then come back. Talked to vet again after a month of cleaning about every 3 days and the vet said just to keep it up. June 2010 - noticed slight swelling just above the cannon bone on outside of left leg. Did not bother him at all, might just be wind puffs. July 28 2010- would not lift left back leg, but would stomp it repeatedly on the ground. He walked with no signs of lameness. His sheath was very swollen. A different person cleaned his sheath and removed a very large bean. Put gel liniment on both legs, which had not been done before. July 29 2010 - went to barn with his massage therapist. He had hives. Massage therapist started to check his legs to see if she could find anything wrong with them when Night started to go on three legs and try to bite his sheath, belly and legs. Any here she touched him he was extremely itchy. He started kicking the walls and stomping his legs. Massage therapist advised we call the vet immediately. Vet came out and gave him a shot of Dexamethasone. Within 30 minutes itching stopped. July 30 2010 - Nightwind was doing better but still had some hives. Vet advised to give him 1/2 packet of dexamethasone daily until hives are gone. August 1 2010 - hives are back and he starts stomping again. Vet comes out, gives another shot of dexamethasone. Vet advised us to give 1 full packet of dexamethasone per day and also Trihist twice a day until gone. August 2 2010 - a few hives, sheath normal size, swelling on leg gone, a little itchy, gave him 1 packet dexamethasone. August 3 2010 - few hives barely visible, everything else fine. Vet said give him 1/2 packet. August 3 through August 8 2010 - he was back to normal. August 9 2010 - 5 hives on shoulder and 2 on neck, sheath slightly swollen, back leg a little swollen. The only thing different for him was August 8th his only 2 pasture buddies left. He was extremely stressed, although there are many other horses on the property. Any help would be appreciated. The vet has been out numerous times. |
