We have a 6 y0 Thoroughbred Racehorse, he dips when the rider first mounts then within a few strides he seems free. He is not performing at his best (although we have had some jockey problems), we have had accredited chiropractors/manipulators look at the horse and they are quite sure he has no ongoing problem, to make it even harder he has no behavioral problems and looks wonderful. Any thoughts on this one?

Is he also girthy? Or does he pin his ears when mounted or saddled? Has he always done this?

Have you had a massage therapist do soft tissue manipulation (massage, acupressure, myofascial release)? Often times a chiropractor will not pick up on soft tissue problems and a sensitive back is a very common problem in horses with muscle issues along the back. Could also cause decreased performance issues as well. If you have not tried this, I would highly recommend you do.

I was massaging a client's horse that presented similarly just recently. There seemed to be some back tenderness on both sides, toward the rear, just before the croup. This horse dips and is reluctant to move after first mounting and then moves off fairly normally. The horse also seems a bit lazy and is 6 yo., under saddle for several years. Saddle has been fitted by a pro. Did you ever decide what the issue was with your horse?

looks like our horses back problem was caused by arthritis in both hocks. treated with pentosan IM and Enhance IA ( but used IV) Looking very good. our vet assures us that back problems are generally caused by some problem with the hocks.
