A friend of mine has a horse who is exhibiting interference from his hind legs...swinging his back legs around when in small circles. It's like he's tripping with is back leg. It was so bad yesterday he was swishing his tail the entire time. He usually moves out in the lead of the pack on rides, but he was pokie yesterday. She couldn't find anything that pained him along his spine (no flinching away from a knuckle rub). There is no apparent swelling and he has full movement so nothing is locked up...it isn't his stifle..... He's under weight even though he's on a deluxe pasture. He's had his vaccines this year that included West Nile and Rhino... On pasture he doesn't get fed feed regularly enough to think its bad feed (other horses are fine) He's always been loosely coupled so trying to recognize abnormal leg placement is a bit difficult...but sometimes the leg will get caught and drag on the ground to get under him.S So now the vet is giving him steroid shots for two weeks. Doc thinks maybe there could be a lesion or something causing swelling on his spine? Any ideas folks?

How old is the horse Sherri? My old mare moves a bit like that but she is old and not ridden. There are sooo many possibility's. A few that come to mind are hock problems....Dslsd (any symptoms of that)? Arthritis....getting into some kind of poisonous weed in the pasture (easy enough to eliminate the possibility by taking him off pasture for a few weeks)....bad trimming of the hooves (long toes) is he shod? There are so many things it COULD be. I do know when my to older horses hocks are bothering them they swish their tail (up and down) as if to hit them with their tails and say quit it! Have they tried some bute or banamine to see if it is related to inflammation?

The horse is only 8. Hock injury and stifle injury has been ruled out. As far as the pasture, there are 6 other horses on the same pasture, and there are no noxious weeds that she is aware of. This is what I told her too, that it could be a multitude of things. I'm not sure if she's tried bute or banamine to see if it's related to inflammation. Good idea though, I will pass that along. Thanks. The horse is shod but no issues with his feet, good farrier.
