Briefly: I am new to the horse world and horse ownership. My horse had an abscess that busted out at the sole/tip of the hoof. I treated him with bute for 4 days and I wrapped it with a betadine and duct tape bandage but I think I stopped it too soon. After the fourth day, it came off on it's own and I figured it had been on long enough. He seemed better and for a day or so didn't appear to limp. He is now limping and it goes from almost not noticeable to clearly a limp, but no where near the lameness when he first came down with it...SHOULD I RESUME TREATMENT? If so, what treatment and for how long. I did go out and buy him some hoof boots with pads for riding. I thought he was all better. We are going on a horse camp in two weeks and want to be able to ride. I bought the boots as he is flat footed and seems very tender in his sole. Thank you for any help. Carol

Welcome Carol, The most common reason for a abscess to become more painful is that it is not draining well. A careful examination to first support the diagnosis and if indeed this is a poorly draining abscess correct the situation will need to be done to determine the correct treatment. You will see a explanation of our abscess treatment recommendations for treatment in the article. DrO
