  Discussion on Splint or not?

Dr. O , my 11 year old mare presented today with a hard bump on the inside of her left fore, about midway between knee and fetlock. I had just finished lunging her and suddenly saw it when I was trimming her feet. The bump is small, but she was not lame on the lunge line at WTC (I would not have lunged her if I would have seen the bump before hand) It seemed slightly hot, so I buted her and cold hosed it. I plan to cold hose it and give her bute for a few days regardless, and to give her two weeks rest to make sure it heals, whatever it is.

I read your articles and discussions about splints immediately afterwards, and came upon the one discussion where you said it was unlikely that an older horse would get a splint.

I had her at a horse show on Saturday, and she seemed unwilling to keep the canter, but was never really lame, and she felt better under saddle on Sunday.

Could this just be a bump on her cannon bone, as you suggested in the other discussion with the lady with the 13 year old gelding - and because of her age she is unlikely to have a splint?.

Thanks,

nancy

While it might be unlikely that an older horse would get a "working splint" they would be just as susceptible to traumatic splints: those caused by blunt trauma.

OK, then, I will treat it as a splint unless it seems otherwise and immediately goes away.

Thanks,
