we've a 12yr old mare that despite being vaccinated had West Nile Virus 7 yrs ago. Recently was diagnosed with EPM. We don't know if the EPM was always there and/or was misdiagnosed with the West Nile episode? We are treating the EPM if it was indeed EPM 7 yrs ago will she recover? Will the treatment for EPM kill the problem if it's been in her system 7 yrs?

I have a mare that showed extreme awkwardness - stumbling on the back feet - over a period of 2 1/2 years - was sent to WSU - spinal was positive for EPM - however x-rays showed three DrOpped vertebrae in her neck - possible Wobbler - We treated for the EPM - she improved dramatically after trying three different drugs - the hind feet stumbling remains. My very unscientific conclusion - she had EPM when she was purchased at 2 - I think her immune system held it off for a couple years before it finally got really bad around age 4. I think the DrOpped vertebrae contributed to the stumbling behavior and her general awkwardness. WSU wanted her to go to Colorado University (I think) for wobbler surgery. It was out of the question financially and physically - it was a major major surgery - I would have put her down before putting her through that. I don't know when she was exposed to the EPM -- could have been in Tennessee where she was bred or could have happened in Washington after she was brought out here - but I'm positive she had it when I bought her. She is 17 now - still stumbles on her hind feet but is perfectly happy being a pasture ornament -
