Hi, I have a 7y/o dutch cross gelding who has been diagnosed with shivers. He has been on a high fat high fiber diet for the last 7 months along with oil and vitamins. I heard that prolixin has been used in this medical condition to help eleviate symptoms. Not many vets up here in canada know about its use. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Hello Terry,
No I have not heard of prolixin being used (successfully or unsuccessfully) for shivers nor can I find any case studies. Shivers remains largely a mystery and about the only progress we have make is determining what it is not. While it can look like polysaccaride storage myopathy and possibly stringhalt it is not related to these in the breeds it has been studied. For more on shivers see, HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Shivers.
