Last night I noticed a dark bruise on the outside of my horses one pink foot. A week prior to the bruise being visible there was a very slight gash, like maybe he hit it on something. Are bruises like this likely to turn into an abscess, or do they usually just heal like bruises a person gets? (gee, I hope this isn't too stupid of a question) He's not lame and doesn't seem bothered when I press on it.

I have seen a lot of bruises, cp, (lots of rock around here) but not one that turned into an abscess. I do not think there's a reason to worry if the horse is not lame.

Seems like every white foot I saw yesterday had some red areas and I don't expect trouble from them. One thing to look for is they usually form at areas of stress between the wall and laminae. Flaring is a common finding at these sites. Yesterday the causes were overly long walls and a unbalanced trim causing the problems. DrO

Hi Dr. O Is it possible that my Dressage horse somehow trapped a rock between his sole and his rubber pad---causing overnight lameness? He also shows slight swelling behind the knee all the way down to his ankle.. We did find a small marble sized rock in that foot.}

Welcome Kristi, Instead of posting your question about your horse at the bottom of cp's discussion you should start your own. This is an appropriate area so back up one page using the navigation bar at the top of the page to » Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels. You will find the New Discussion button at the bottom of the page. If you have not already review the article, it may answer your question. For more on posting see Help & Information on Using This Site » Welcome to The Horseman's Advisor. Thank you for helping us keep HA organized. DrO
