I bought my quarter horse gelding last June. The person we bought him from told us about his stifle jerking sometimes when he comes out of his stall but told us the vet said this was normal and not a big deal. We have had a lot of problems with this over the past year. I have only now read enough to finally understand what this is. This past weekend, he came out of his stall and had a very hard time getting it unlocked. His leg would go straight out to the side without bending. Our vet came out yesterday and told me he was not getting worked enough and not getting enough exercise and this would make it worse. I think I have been worried that I would over work him, so I have been riding him less and working him less than the rest of my horses. I think I am a little confused as to what to do as far as working him. It seems to me that round pen work would hurt that more than help. He suggested trail riding and riding and working in a straight line as opposed to circles. After reading the articles here, I finally understand what this is, I am just a little confused as to how to keep this from happening as much. Dr. O, what do you suggest as far as amount of exercise and types of exercise?

I think the work he recommends is sensible Julie. For our other suggestions on management and surgery see the article Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Diseases of the Stifle » Stifle Lock: Upward Fixation of the Patella. DrO
