Posted on Tuesday, Jun 14, 2005 - 6:02 pm: I have a 4-yr old gelding, Chelsing (15.4hh & 1100 lbs.), who has always had chronic bouts of watery diarrhea. I have often had to put him on antibiotics, which only offered a temporary (2-3 week) relief from the diarrhea. My friend told me about probiotics (beneficial "good" bacteria, also found in yogurt) that can prevent diarrhea by eliminating the bacteria (like E. coli) that cause diarrhea and GI problems. Obviously, I thoroughly reviewed these probiotic supplements before I gave them to Chesling. I was quite impressed with the research on probiotics and how they can prevent or stop diarrhea in both humans and horses (by improving the immune system and reducing the amount of "bad" bacteria in the gut). I have been giving Chelsing the Jarrow Formulas brand probiotic supplement for horses called Equine-Dophilus with great success. He no longer has bouts of diarrhea and I have found that he has gained about 20 lbs. of lean body mass without a change in his diet. If your horse has problems with diarrhea or watery stools or is prone to intestinal problems, give this product a try. I wasn't able to order this product directly from Jarrow, but had to request it through my local health food store. (I guess Jarrow only sells through health food stores and Whole Foods stores, etc.). Your health food store will be able to order directly from Jarrow for you. Jarrow's order line is 800-726-0886. Posted on Wednesday, Jun 22, 2005 - 8:53 am: Hi Dr O,I found that 1/2 teaspoon per day mixed into the feed worked best for my 1100# horse. 1/2 teaspoon is 2 grams and the container of Equine Dophilus is 500 grams. I paid $75 for the container of ED from my local health food store, so this works out to $0.30 per day (if you are using a 2 gram dose per day). Yes, there is a date of manufacture of the package and it guarantees 25 Billion beneficial microorganisms at the time of manufacture. I keep mine in the fridge which helps to keep the live organisms alive for longer. If you refrigerated the product, it will still be "alive" even well past the expiration date on the container. I just used mine until I ran out of it, which was 6 months past the expiration date, and it was effective throughout that whole time. The strains that are in the Equine Dophilus are very hardy strains that can survive well, even at room temperatures. Let me know if you have any other questions. Take Care, Brian |

Posted on Monday, Aug 8, 2005 - 4:18 pm: FYI: Jarrow Formulas Equine-Dophilus is now 30% off for a limited time. I found this out when I went to special order it from my local health food store. Talk to your local health food store and have them order it (Jarrow does not accept orders directly from consumers, so you have to go through a store). 800-726-0886 is the Jarrow Order Line.My horse Chesling is still diarrhea free and I love that the probiotic supplements help to keep the GI infections away. -Brian |
