We have a coming 4 year old who experienced stifle lock a couple of times as an yearling, then again during a growth spurt as a 3 year old. The last episode was severe and we had to take her to the vet to get it unlocked. He injected something I think, and we have had no further problems. We are starting lunge work with her now with saddle and bridle and she is doing great. No lameness at all either direction, great attitude. We have her in training 3 - 4 times a week. She lives in a large paddock with one other horse. What is the normal protocol re: introducing a rider for a horse with a history of this problem? I sure don't want to risk injury to the horse or rider. She seems to be evening out now re: growth - was extremely rump high during the last episode and somewhat lanky. She has also put on quite a bit of weight. Is actually becoming a "balanced" horse. Thanks for your input.

Judy, there is no standard protocol for such a history. It seems unlikely that the horse will lock under saddle but I see no way to predict if it is going to happen. About all I can say is go slow, be sure it is an experienced rider, and that they are aware of the risks.
