Hi DrO, Hoping you can give me some advice on a new wound that showed up on Sunday afternoon as a scrape on the top of the hoof going into the coronet band. There was a tiny trickle of blood, but the scrape did not bother him (he's very sensitive and would have let me know) so I took him out for a short trail walk. The next day his ankle was swollen about halfway up to his hock (it's his RH), but the cut didn't look any worse. My vet came to see us Monday afternoon and we started him on SMZs, bute because it was now hurting him, and we wrapped it overnight. Not too much difference the next day, but the swelling is down a bit. Went out tonight to do the PM cleaning and it looked completely different. Now I am panicking! The scratch is now a hole, the hoof is soft in the area, and there is a red buldge on his coronet that I am afraid is going to explode by morning. Now I just don't know what to do!!! It was just a little cut, now I'm really worried it's going to get even worse. This is the same horse that was diagnosed w/a venomous snake bite back in early Nov. This wound is now acting similarly, except the ooze is different, this ooze is clear jelly. Help! Here's a picture I just took. See the area to the top right of the hole? What the heck! Anything you can advise?

Hello cinnamon, Your description suggests the wound is trying to become infected. I treat wounds like this as described at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care. I always bandage these wounds with a antibacterial poltice since their location always leads to contamination. You can read more about wounds to this area at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Wounds / Burns » Coronary Band Injury. Pay particular attention to the part about foreign bodies in these type wounds. DrO
