My three year old holsteiner gelding has a new bump on his leg. It looks like a "popped split" but it is too low to be a result of splint bone trauma. It clearly involves the small the dime size bumps normally found on each side of lower legs between the fetlock and the mid cannon (I don't know what this structure is). The normally small bony feeling bump is enlarged and tender like a injured splint bone. What is this? Does it require a vet visit or expected to cause problems? The horse is not lame.

Hello Kate,
It sounds to me like you are describing the end of the splint bone but I cannot be sure, check out HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Overview of Cannon Lameness. It has a good image of the bony structrures of the cannon. If you do determine that the problem is the button at the end of the splint bone there is a link in that article to diseases of the splint bone. There you can read about the common conditions and there treatment and prognosis. If you remain uncertain about what is going on then is a good time to involve your veterinarian.
