Hi Everyone,

I just (two months ago) rescued a horse who is displaying severe shaking/spasming of the upper rear legs when he tries to lie down to roll or rest.

The horse is a 21 year old Oldenburg. 17.2 hh. Previously heavily ridden in dressage at Prix St. George Level. Rescued from neglect.

Changes since he came to us:
Is still under weight but gaining well at this point. Stomach ulcers are being addressed. Was VERY stiff in the rear but getting better and gaining flexibility. Also rebuilding muscle tone nicely.

What I am wondering about is this strong shaking. It does not discourage him from lying down to roll though. It happens at the moment of him trying to lower himself slowly right before "plopping" all the way to the ground as if his muscles are straining so much that they shake. He never shows any shaking in other situations and is overall very active and playful.

Any ideas what causes this?

Thanks
Diana

Hello Diana,
If the lameness behind is arthritis it might be very painful to lay. I would start with a good lameness and neurological exam to try and sort, pain, weakness, and incoordiation out as causes.
