Posted on Sunday, May 1, 2011 - 9:49 pm: Dr. O, I am really not trying to get my money's worth here, but it sure seems like my animal Karma is in need of realignment!I went to the MN horse expo Friday,so I was gone all weekend. I have been really keeping an eye on Lacy since she lost the baby, brushing her daily etc. Tom said on Saturday morning, the girl that works for us, said Lacy had a big swelling on her jaw, and pus dripping from it. I am posting a picture or 2 I have 2 close ups i took, but the post says they are too big, 75 and 71. Is there a way to make them smaller? Anyhow, Tom called the vet out, he apparently sedated her, cleaned out the wound, looked in her mouth said that he did not see anything, no foreign objects, broken teeth etc. He gave her a penicillin shot, left some uniprim powder antibiotic, and said to just leave it uncovered. Tom asked him if it could be from the previous swelling on her side of her face from being kicked, and he did not think so. Her swelling is completely gone, could this be from this injury that it has finally worked its way out the bottom of her face, it is not really in the same area of the swelling. She is a 3 year old this month and has been teething. He did not tell tom to clean it, but I did put a warm water compress on it for a while this evening, then cleaned it with some sterile wash, some vetricyn spray and then put on some triple antibiotic ointment. Since he did not tell tom to do anything or give her any pain meds, (you know how I feel about my options here) Is this ok. I read the wound care, and abscess care, but it would be hard to squirt her face with a hose, I think, but if you think I could, I certainly could try? I wish I could post the other pictures, as they are very clear as to what the wound looks like. I was pretty sure after the cat with FUS, the mini getting kicked in the face and losing her baby, and having to put Dusty down, that my animal woes might be getting a break, but jeez . . . This is where the swelling was, it is no longer swollen |

Posted on Monday, May 2, 2011 - 4:53 pm: I called the vet this am and asked to speak to the vet because Tom was just not up on what to ask etc. They said he was gone farming, and would not be back for a while. I asked if they could look at his notes, and let me know what he found, thought it was, etc. They came back and said there are not any notes. Just a farm call. I am certain I will get the bill however! Lacy seems ok, I will try to take her temp, as she was laying down a bit today. But the sun was out, and she does lay down more than my other two boys. Any thing I should be "keeping an eye on" specifically, as that was his instructions to my husband. "keep and eye on her, and if she isn't better in 10 days give them a call." I am thinking of finding a new hobby . suz |

I am not sure if there is a relation between the swelling and the abscess but it sure is quite a coincidence. DrO |
