Hi, Wondering if you might be able to tell which category these sores fall under? There seems to be so many possibilities, I'm not sure which article I should refer to. These are appearing on the inside flank and around the gelded parts, deep in the crease of his leg on one side, which makes fly bites seem less likely, to me anyway. He is a 6-yo dunskin, but has a grey gene and is starting to turn. He has had a sarcoid in the past that got to about the size of a quarter, but we got lucky and it shrank down to just a tiny bump on it's own after about 2-years. I noticed welts a few days ago, then the welts erupted. Now they look like they're done, but there's swelling just outside the area (you can see just to the bottom right in today's pic). Here's a pic from yesterday (the ooze coming out was too solid to wipe away): Here's a pic from today: Any ideas? Should I do anything with them? I've been cleaning w/betadine-water solution, and surrounding with Swat.

They look a bit like summer sores to me. I've had good luck with cleaning those with betadine solution like you said and then putting on some triple antibiotic ointment, also surrounding with Swat or fly spray. If they get too moist there comes a stage when blue lotion is helpful to dry them up. If they are summer sores you should eventually see a deep hole where the sore was and that means that the fly larvae has exited the horse. More frequent use of Ivermectin is helpful in preventing new summer sores if that should prove to be the problem.

Just went out to give the boys their nightly hose down, and I was wrong, they are not done exploding. Very gross, although I couldn't help myself, I squeezed it.

I've just been through ticks and flies here in NJ. I scrub them with Betadine and then cover them in 1/4 inch of Swat. I'm using the old, virulent pink shade of Swat. That way, I know when it's worn off.
