Hi Dr. O., Can you tell me what a chemical neurectomy is: what is it used for, drugs used, duration, etc. Sorry if it is in the write ups and I missed it. Thanks Lynn

Hello Lynn, Although many chemicals have been proposed usually ethyl-alcohol in combination with a local anesthetic is used. I have heard of reserpine being used but I have no experience with that and experiments indicate it might not be very effective. It is used to create a temporary but long acting denervation to allow a lame horse trot sound in the same manner a surgical neurectomy would. It can also be used to fool people into thinking a unsound horse is sound. Do to the high complication rate, primarily severe tissue reaction at the injection site, I have not done these for many years. The duration is variable from several weeks to several months long. I have heard some claim a six month response but have not seen this but with repeated injections generally the nerve takes longer to recover. DrO
