Dr. O,

My horse urinates a lot and it is the color of water all the time. Is this normal? I read in one of your articles it should be slightly yellow, so I'm concerned she may be I.R.. She had a Cushing's test which came back negative, but she is drinking and urinating twice her prior amount. This began about the time she was put on Thyro L for thyroid problems. Your thoughts please.

Thank You,

Shirl

Hello Shirley,
Hyperthyroidism often does have increased drinking and urination associated with it. It may be the thyroid supplement has pushed what almost certainly is a adult horse with normal thyroid function into a hyperthyroid state. For more on this see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Endocrine System » Hyperthyroidism. Also review the article on "Hypothyroidism" that is in the same location.

Of course there are other possibilities as outlined in the article associated with this discussion area. You should discuss with your veterinarian how (s)he wishes to go about the investigation that may start with discontinuing the thyroid meds or the diagnostic tests in the article.
