I have a 16 yr old gelding with epsm that has had recurrent nosebleeds all from rt nostril. He has been scoped, x-rayed head and nothing found. His episodes (3) all ocurred while turned out with no evidence of trauma. My vet thinks its pulmonary origin. I still ride him and he does fine,,,,,, but Im concerned about taking him on long rides away from home. What next? Lab work was good. He is on alot of suppliments as his epsm has caused some muscle atrophy and stiffness. Meds include: thyroid, duralactin, cosequin, Vit E, and equithrive. I do give bute only when I ride him or trailer him on long rides. Thanks!

Hello caryl, Pulmonary hemmorhage is almost always bilateral, what does the vet base this assumption on? This is most likely originating from the right upper respiratory tract or guttural pouch. In order to get to the bottom of this the origin of the blood must be ascertained. Perhaps a visit and scoping from the vet while bleeding will lead to the origin. DrO
