Hi there. I'm new to the discussion forum so bear with me. My 12 year old mare had recently developed some rain rot after some heavy showers. I treated her with medicated shampoo and betadine. The rain rot disapeared on her rump. However she started a seemingly new skin condition. It looks as if herhair is raised the skin is dry and wrinkly and she has pieces of dry skin which you can pull off. Could this be a reaction to the treatment I administered, a new condition or still rain rot? I would appreciate any advice on this. Thank you, Michi

Michaela,

Have had a case of a horse having such strange looking skin as part of a case of rain rot.

The hide seemed almost dead and dry. It was frightening but it all came right.

Just washed with Betadine scrub a couple of times.

Hope that it is this simple for your horse.

Welcome Michaela,
Though the picture is not helpful, the description sounds like more rainrot. For a description of the diagnosis of rainrot see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Rain Rot and Rain Scald: Dermatophilus.

Thank you so much for your advice. Even though not confirmed by a vet, I concur with a diagnose of rain rot. I'll keep treating it and hope to see improvement soon. Thank you again, Michi
