Discussion on SCC On Penis | |

Posted on Monday, Aug 29, 2011 - 11:47 am: Hello Dr. O,I recently noticed on my 25 yo bay Arabian gelding that he appeared to have 2 small growths on the end of his penis. In order to get a better look I got some Ace from a local vet so I could clean it well. I found not only the 2 small growths I originally saw, but also found several other small growths. I have posted some pictures to see if, in your opinion, this resembles squamous cell carcinoma. I certainly know I need a biopsy to confirm, but I have recently moved to the area I am in and have not had enough experience with the vets around here to form real trust. The one that has come out for other horses on the property has me second guessing her so if this really appears to be SCC, I'd like to trailer my horse up to my previous vet. Oh, I also noticed that the area around his urethra had an almost white crud...not like the usual smegma I'm used to seeing on him. It was almost like a thin spreadable paste, and I wondered if that may be a sign of some infection. As a side note, last year I noticed on his nose, where he has a white snip, that there was a tiny growth (less than half a grain of rice) that stood out like a finger. Almost like a skin tag. I always put sunscreen and fly masks on him to prevent sunburn but I'm sure he occasionally gets some sun there. Could that also possibly have been SCC. One day I went out and it was just gone and there was a little spot of blood, like he had scraped it off on something. Thank you in advance for your help. Jayne |

It was a little difficult to do...I really needed an extra hand, but I also had my husband crop them and blow them up for better viewing.Dr. O, I thought maybe I should also add this....my gelding's sheath is rather swollen on the left side right now, but I believe it is due to a horsefly bite. I can see a pit where it looks like he was bitten. I just wanted to add that. I haven't really been doing anything for it (it's been swollen for about 2 days) since I figured there's not a lot I can do and that the sheath is an area that would be slow for swelling to go down after a bite. |

These can be caused by some types of virus's but there are other possibilities. Many pappilomas are benign. However as you say until biopsied it is just conjecture. To read more about viral pappilomas see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors. I will definitely read more about viral pappilomas so I have a clear understanding of them. I have gone ahead and scheduled a biopsy for the end of September just to be on the safe, and prudent, side. I will let you know the outcome. Thanks again!! Jayne |

Posted on Thursday, Jan 5, 2012 - 6:51 pm: Thanks, Ann! Yes, they are all gone now...the vet took off 3 pieces of skin that had a total of about 12 growths. A couple of vets assumed they were SCC and were surprised when that came back as pappilomas, but I'm certainly thankful! |
