DrO My gelding had a blood test that some areas came back high. He was examined for a painful SI. He has atropy in his back and hindend. He has mild ringbone. He seems otherwise healthy. He was on his last shot (out of 4) of pentosan when the blood test was taken. He is on pasture and grass hay. He is 9. During the exam he was trotted back and forth several times to evaul his movement. Other than that he has not been forced exercised. Thanks in advance for any insight. I wont be able to talk with my vet unntil late this week. thank you

Hello Lara, There are very few chem tests results that have much significance without a good physical exam and thorough history. That said several general statements can be made. Liver and muscle enzymes can elevate quite remarkably in some mild conditions and not so high in some quite severe conditions. In the case of LDH this may be either or muscle or liver origin. These levels would be considered mild increases. As a result the significance of the above changes is uncertain and since the other liver and muscle enzymes are normal and the only test of liver function (tbili) normal it would seem these changes are not likely to be clinically significant. If it is determined there may be a problem with the liver the article discusses the significance of the above enzymes and ways to further pursue the possibility. DrO
