Hi Dr. O,

I have just started leasing a lovely mare that had been on lease to a young teenager for the past two years. Mid summer the horse started stopping at the jumps and the young girl and her mom were informed that the horse had previously been diagnosed as anemic and should have been getting iron supplement (despite 1.5 years of great performance and the horse looking superb). So, the mom has been adding this iron supplement (https://www.finishlinehorse.com/product/category2.asp) 2-3 times per week to the horse's feed. I would like to have some blood tests done but wonder how long she should be off the supplement before I do it.

Thanks

Lynn

Hello Lynn,
It depends on whether you are interested in looking at the supplemented iron levels or the levels without the supplement, both might be interesting. Click the link in the anemia article on iron deficiency. This will lead you to the mineral article which has a discussion on iron in the horses diet along with what we know currently about supplemented iron clearance times.
