I have old raccoon DrOppings in three places in my barn that I would like to clean up. Most of it is very old and has been there for many years. One spot is located in the loft above my horse stalls. I am concerned about cleaning up the old mess, because there will be dust from the DrOppings that could potentially spread into the stalls from the seams in the particle board floor of the loft. I know you have to use a respirator, etc., to do it, and I have all the human needs covered. However, I am concerned about what might occur with the horses and am wondering if I should just leave the fecal matter alone since no one goes up to the loft anyway. We don't keep hay up there; it's basically empty. I had planned to scrub the stall walls, floors and ceilings after the cleanup and before putting the horses back in the barn, but is this enough?

Hello 4baby, I don't think the dust created during a careful cleaning is any larger a risk than leaving it to slowly degenerate and turning to a fine dust that will be picked up and spread around by very light movements of air, insects, rodents, etc... As to your plans to clean afterward it would seem likely to lower the incidence of possible protozoan contamination. DrO
