Dr. O, this is a two year old filly in reining cow horse training. She's doing well and showing no lameness, very forward and reaching under self well with both hinds. On Sunday I noticed this swelling. It's hard--bony, and doesn't seem to be sore. I watched him ride her today and she doesn't appear to be off to my eye and the trainer says he can't feel anything off. Has a very extended trot and canters well both directions. Since she's showing not signs of anything, do we need to lay her off, do ultra sound or can we follow the "if it ain't broke" method?

Hello Julie, Yes that is "Curb" but this is not a diagnosis as there are 4 conditions that can cause a swelling like this. You will find all of them described at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Curb or Curby Hocks: Tarsal Plantar Desmitis in Horses. In general such swellings can represent injury and inflammation of the soft tissues of this area and should be rested and treated with antiinflammatories to allow the tissues to heal before training is resumed. But a good exam that will probably involve ultrasound will help with this decision. DrO
