One of our stallions has pigeon fever but, as mentioned in another thread, does not appear ill. He has three draining abscesses on his chest. at least one of them has the draining area high up on the abscess, which creates a pocket where dilute betadine can collect if the pocket is flushed. Is that a problem? Should it be flushed anyway? What is the proper dilution? Thanks, Judy

Judy, I had a filly with the same abscess draining into a pocket .. i still used the iodine / saline solution with no problems.. i '' think'' it was 1/4 iodine to 3/4 saline .. i used a hospital surgical tube to insert and flush with .. Nasty illness isn't it... On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

Thanks Ann, Did you use Betadine and saline or Iodine and saline? Yes....it is horrible. Fortunately the affected horses seem well - alert, eating normally, walking around normally, and no elevated temp. Judy

Sorry Betadine and Saline .. ... in the case of my filly all three abscess merged to one big gapping hole so it was much easier to irrigate.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..
