I have a mare with a very bad case of pigeon fever for the past 6 weeks. She is now one month from expected foaling date, and I have not updated her vaccinations as was hoping to be able to wait until she had no open abscesses. She has a very large open abscess draining right now (though it is healing), and a couple more threatening to open.

What is your advice re administering vaccines to a pregnant mare under these conditions? I have a vet appointment for her tomorrow and will discuss with my vet as well. Thanks.

Hello Cynthia,
The problem is that the injection may easily result in abscessation so I would wait unless there are strong reasons to booster and then I would shave and surgically prep prior to injection.

The vet and I decided to go ahead and administer the booster vaccine as the mare is so close to foaling and also the PF does not look like it will be cleared by the 'due date.' The vet opted to give the vaccine in the hip. No problems seen yet (after 3 days).

Hi Cynthia! We also have a pregnant mare who has recovered from PF. Thanks for asking this question. Magico is now about 4 weeks out from having one of the abscesses rupture, the skin slough off, and a hole so deep and large in diameter that you could easily put your whole fist into it with room to spare. We just got him out of the hospital early last week. It is now down to the size of maybe a nickel, is no longer draining at all, the hair is back and normal. There is no way in the world we would have thought that he could recover from that kind of what appeared to be a "flesh eating" wound this fast. Primary treatment was vetericyn and isolation. Hopefully your mare will recover within this month and be fine when she foals. Our thoughts are with you. Judy
