Hi Dr O I came across a post on another forum stating that Cushings cases should not be fed soya oil because of its hormonal effect (soya is believed by some to be a mild version of hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women, based on the observations that ladies in the Far East who eat a high-soya diet suffer fewer and milder menopausal symptoms than those who have "Western" diets). Do you have any thoughts on this please? I've been happily glugging it into Cara's feeds to keep her calorie intake up and she seems to like it. She has never been a big eater so I always worry about her getting enough to eat, especially now she is on a high fibre, low sugar/starch diet and has compromised teeth.

I would be interested in this answer also, since I was considering adding cocosoya oil to my mare's feed, and I am almost certain she has Cushings.

Me too, as I think that my feed has soy hulls in it and one of mine has a metabolic problem.

Hello Helenw, I have seen no scientific work that addresses your question or whether a combination of coconut and soybean oil may be detrimental to a Cushings horse. If your horse seems to be doing well on it and you don't mind paying an unnecessary premium over more common but just as nutritious vegetable oils you should continue to use it. DrO

Thanks Dr O. I didn't think it was all that likely either, but a second opinion is always welcome! I agree about the premium but old Fussy Chops does like her soya oil. Perhaps I'll try blending in some ordinary veg oil. Is corn oil ok given the fact Cushing's horses have to avoid grains?

Yes vegetable oil is pretty much vegetable oil though some will bring up the balance of essential fatty acids, omega-3 vs omega-6, and the high level of omega-6 in corn oil.
