My 3 year old filly rolled over a fence and cut the top of her left hip-not real big, maybe 3-4 inches long or so and not very deep, but through the skin. The vet sewed it up and gave her a shot of penicillin, and it looked good. It was frigid outside so I put a blanket on her and didn't check it for a few days. Dumb idea. When I did check it, the sutured area was yucky and smelly, so I removed the blanket, cleaned all around the area, and put some antibiotic gel on the sutured wound. It continues to drain down her hip and exude kind of a bloody pus. My question is--should I do anything more at this point?

If it smells bad and is draining puss I'd have your vet take a look at it - usually sign of an infection. If you can flush the wound in the meantime & keep it scrubbed with betadine without undoing the sutures and then keep something like Vetericyn on it (or give your vet a call & see what he or she suggests until they can get there). You really don't want your horse laying on it and getting bacteria into it if it's infected either but I would imagine you'd want it to breathe. If your horse is anything like my little piggies the side that's got the injury would be the exact place they want to lay on.

I have had a great deal of success with an aerosol called alumaspray. I think that is the name - or something close to that. It effectively seals impossible to bandage areas, is a very good antiseptic, easy to use, lasts for a few days, and repels flies. Marvelous stuff this!

I love that Alumaguard / Alumaspray stuff, fantastic water resistant cover for wounds but I doubt she'd want to seal up that wound if it's infected (smelling bad) and oozing puss. Please at least call your vet and ask, I know my vet would be happy to discuss over the phone if I had any questions, they might think it's best to come out and re-do it, maybe it's something you can handle on your own but if it smells bad - that's a red flag to me.
