Hi Dr O, A new livery arrived at the weekend, a grey (white) mare, arab, looking at her ears. I don't know her age but I would guess in her teens at least. Both her eyes have bright red sclera - I've never seen the like! The tissues are also distinctly inflamed as they stand proud of the eyeballs. There is no evidence that she is in pain, there is no squinting or tearing but Jeez, she really does look like a devil horse! Any idea what this could be? I'm just eaten up with curiosity.

Hello Helen, There are several reasons the sclera can be bright red. Inflammation and hemmorage are the two that first come to mind. If the sclera is truly swollen it does sound like inflammation is likely. Infection, trauma including trauma from foreign bodies and caustic substances are some of the possibilities. I certainly recommend you have the mare looked at so a diagnosis can be made to see if there might be a useful therapy. DrO

Hello again Dr O, I doubt the horse will be seen by a vet to be honest. It moved onto the farm last week with two other buddies, one of which is hugely lame in both front legs, really pottery and bad to turn, which looks suspiciously like laminitis (its very overweight too and is a cob type anyway). It actually makes my Cara look sound I can't understand how people can have animals and then turn a blind eye to their health problems but it seems rather common in my area unfortunately. I'll see if I can take some sneaky photos and post them here for you to look at.
