Despite regular rotational worming, my horse has a warble on his flank. I have exposed the breathing hole, but cannot get my fingers under it to express it. How in the world do I extract it????

Could you please post a photo? I have no idea what a warble is! There are probably quite a few of us who would like to learn from your experience.

A warble is a cattle grub that is embedded under the skin and has breathing hole through which it will eventually emerge. They cannot complete a life cycle in a horse. While I can find ample information and videos on how to remove them from "loose hided" animals like cats, dogs, and squirrels, as well as various methods in cattle, I can't find anything on horses!

It's just FREAKY!!

I wonder if putting a bit of ivermectin paste or permethian (SP?) spray into the hole would kill the larva. Probably, but then you still need to get it out I guess? Squeeze like a big pimple? Not very helpful am I?

Hello Michele,
If you kill it, particularly crushing it, it can cause a local reaction. I sedate the horse inject a little local, enlarge the hole just enough to extract the warble then allow the wound to heal open with some local antimicrobial treatment.

Michelle, my rescued horse had one on her back and a wise rancher friend told me to put the open end of a glass coke bottle over it and hit the bottom of the bottle. It worked and that UGLY GRUB popped inside the bottle. I then doctored it every day w/qtip and hyDrOgen peroxide until it closed up. You could see the grub down inside the hole.
YUCK!
