My pony developed a small lump on her neck a few weeks ago, but it went away on it's own after a few days. I just assumed she had either been bit by a horsefly or had rubbed in on something and irritated the skin. However, I noticed this morning that it is back, larger this time, and the skin is raw on one side.

She is in a dry lot by herself, so no chance she was kicked. I still think it may be a reaction to an insect bite (she is very itchy/sensitive to bug bites, and is on hyDrOxyzine twice daily) but would like opinions.

I should also mention she is acting completely normal, no temp etc. and it does not seem to be sensitive when I touch/palpate it.

The combination of hair loss and swelling suggests trauma to me CC. But to understand more than just the visual elements on diagnosing swellings see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.
