Hi Dr. O and All,

I'm trying to find some definitive information regarding any toxicity of crepe myrtles. My husband and I just bought property and have some already there, and may consider planting more for shade if they are not considered toxic. I've researched it but see differing information. Also, I was told by someone that their goat died from eating flowers from a crepe myrtle. I know they have a different digestive system, etc.

Any definitive information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jayne

ASPCA says they are non-toxic to Horses, Cats and Dogs, here's the link:

They grow VERY slowly though so if you're planting for shade you may be waiting a very long time...

Thank you for your response, Andrea. I did see that link previously while trying to research this subject. It's just that I have also read about people saying that they (or people they know) have had problems with them. My own vet said they have no knowledge of problems related to the tree, but cautioned against downed limbs and flowers since the plant actually changes at that point. Kind of like toxicity in wilting Red Maple leaves.

Well, some plants do have different qualities once wilted so I would err on the side of caution then. I did not see anything when searching though.
