Greetings!
My little guy is losing patches of hair and not sure if it would be the rain rot or ringworm type.
He has never been with any other horses other than his mother. He is in a large sandy turn out pen with her and manure is picked up twice daily. We have bad flies and I use fly predators and fly traps. At first I thought it was flies irritating him. He had a lot of sand in his hair and today his first brushing to remove it, especially a long his back when I noticed the newest patch (the first picture). I am attaching pictures if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks.

Hello 4jane,
The best way to tell the difference in these two diseases is to note the way the hair comes out, in particular did scabs form. For more on this see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Rain Rot and Rain Scald: Dermatophilus.

Thanks DR. O. I knew I forgot something. Hair does not come out in clumps like the rain rot. There really does not seem to be scabbing except the one on rear leg looks a little scabby. I do not notice bumps prior to hair loss. On his front legs and chest it looks more like hair thinning with smooth skin underneath. On his rear the hair seems to get darker before loss (second picture). He does not seem itchy or to be bothered by these. Will have vet out this next week but am confused as to what to put on him til then. My gut says try something for ringworm, but no other horse or animal shows symptoms, he has not left his corral since birth, shared brushes etc.

My daughter looked at him today and thinks it is related to his shedding his foal coat as he is almost 3 mos old and has the dark eye rings. Do foals shed in tiny spots as he is doing on his rear? I thought the shedding patches would be larger.

The general thinning with normal skin that is somewhat bilateral in nature could very well be loss of the foal coat. However the spots of hair loss seen in the first images looks to be something a bit more. If there are no scabs ringworm is possible.
