I would be grateful for some views on how to treat my horse. Swelling similar to a wind gall was noticed in his leg just over a week ago. He continued at pasture as apparently wasn't sore on palpitation. I became aware of the swelling on Wednesday and the vet was called and after initial exam he was box rested, and ultrasound on thursday. From ultrasound there seems to be no visible injury to the tendon but some fibrin in the tendon sheath. Heat developed in the swelling yesterday (friday). He is going to an equine hospital on Monday for a second opinion. How would you treat the leg till then? He is on box rest and on oral anti inflammatories and am going to ice bandage him this morning. What else would be good to do? Would like to give him the gold standard treatment. How often should an ice bandage be applied? Are compression bandages recommended or poultice bandages? Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Hello RosieP, Since we cannot examine the horse and there seems to be uncertainty as to what the diagnosis is we cannot make specific recommendations. For acute tenosynovitis (inflammation of the tendon and sheath) certainly stall rest and NSAID's are the mainstay. Cold can be of benefit. We cover these topics, including detailed description of cold bandaging, in the Treatment section of HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Flexor Tendinitis. In this article it will also discuss diagnosis, long term therapy, and the rehabilitation regimen. DrO
