I hope this is in the right category. My 19 year old horse had some right fore lameness in may that resolved with 2 weeks rest. The vet thought I'd over done it fittening him and I'd started to jump him again after a 6 month break from jumping and said be more conservative. 2 weeks ago he had the same problem. Also after jumping. The vet thought it likely he had arthritis in the foreleg so xrayed him. He has lovely clean joints but has a bone spur in the insertion point for the superior check ligament. He also nerve blocked his foot and ruled that out as the problem. Vet came today and scanned his ligaments to confirm it is within the ligament, it is. Pi has had a bone spavin which is fusing very slowly for a decade, is on 2 danilon (bute equivalent) a day, joint supps due to his age. So his forelegs have taken some strain over the years but he has essentially been retired to hacking with a bit of schooling jumping for the decade. Vet thought the spur showed significant strain to the ligament for a sustained amount of time, only it occured to me afterwards that we don't know when that occured and if it was still a problem. Pi is now sound on the right fore and so we can't nerveblock any more. My vet is going to consult with a colleague. Has anyone heard of this in horses? Is it general wear and tear? Something that occurs with certain work? Whats the prognosis? Is it likely that the ligament will "go" at some point? I have already decided to stop jumping him and retire him to a hack and I only hack for about 45 minutes with occasional longer walk of 90 minutes as a quarterly treat.

Hello Mrs. Perry, Chronic inflammation of just about any soft tissue can eventually result in calcification. From the information you provide it is uncertain that this is the cause of the lameness but there is a surgery for this condition that you can read about at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Inferior Check Ligament Desmitis » Research Summary: Desomotomy of the Superior Check Ligament for CL desmitis and Flexor Contracture.
